Itinerary
Day 1: Saturday, Feb 25th , 2023
Your adventure into our neighboring country starts with a transfer to Reynosa´s airport. Your flight to Mexico City will take less than two hours and… here it is, a
huge population of 22+ million people in the metropolitan area, known to locals as DF (Spanish abbreviation for Federal District): the capital of the Mexican
Republic!!!
We will then visit the archaeological city of Teotihuacan, the first city built in Mesoamerica. Get to see the local museum to get a closer look at some of the artifacts
found during excavations and take a chance to climb the huge Pyramid to the Sun or the Pyramid to the Moon. Have lunch at a great restaurant while you admire
the presentation of pre-hispanic dances or mariachi musicians! On our way back to Mexico City, we will stop at the Basilica that honors Our Lady of Guadalupe, the
second most visited sanctuary in the world right after the Vatican!
Overnight in Mexico City
Day 2: Sunday, Feb 26th , 2023
We´ll tour the southern part of Mexico City as we visit Coyoacán, house to many intellectuals, diplomats, and artists. Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera lived in this
suburb! After lunch, there will be a chance to visit Xochimilco, “the floating gardens of Mexico”, enlisted by UNESCO in 1987 as a World Heritage Site. We might
be lucky enough to watch the presentation of the famous flying men “Voladores de Papantla” and we will have a chance to buy some souvenirs at bargain prices!!!
As an optional but highly recommended activity for tonight, at the gorgeous Palace of Fine Arts, you are strongly suggested to enjoy the presentation of the best
folkloric ballet in Mexico: Ballet Nacional de Amalia Hernandez! Your guide can help you get tickets and transportation for this unique experience.
Breakfast included.
Overnight in Mexico City
Day 3: Monday, Feb 27th , 2023
After breakfast, our tour will include views of the main square or “zócalo”, the presidential palace, once the place where Aztec emperor Moctezuma had his living
headquarters, the massive metropolitan cathedral and the ruins of the “Templo Mayor” (Great Temple), the sacred Aztec temple devoted to the Gods of War and
Rain! If possible, we might have the opportunity to admire the famous murals painted by Diego Rivera inside the presidential palace.
Once through with lunch, we will leave Mexico City! Our destination is the Villa Monarca Hotel, situated on the outskirts of Zitacuaro, in the state of Michoacan!
Enjoy the included dinner and make sure to fully charge the batteries of your cameras and other devices for tomorrow´s destination! Your guide will offer a
presentation about the monarch butterfly: learn about the distance they cover from Canada, the multigenerational journey they undertake to go back home, and
many other important facts about these migrant fellows!!!
Tonight, the temperature might drop, so, get ready to cuddle up!
Breakfast and supper included
Overnight in Zitacuaro
Day 4: Tuesday, Feb 28th , 2023
Today is the day! We are on our way to the Monarch Biosphere Reserve! Our driver will take us to the town of Ocampo and then to the Monarch Butterfly
Sanctuary of El Rosario. The wonderful experience of getting so close to the monarch butterflies that you will be able to hear the flapping of their wings and the
colorful display they put on when they come down to the ground to get water, will become memories not to be soon forgotten!
We will be dropped off near the visitors’ center and is up the hill for a while, or you may want to rent a horse to ride your way up! Just make sure to take it easy,
anyway! As you climb, make sure to look for the Broad-billed hummingbird, you could get a great snap of it!
Millions of Monarch butterflies cluster on fir trees in the state of Michoacán! They certainly happen to be one of the most spectacular shows that nature can offer to
mankind! Although we might not want to, we´ll have to continue our way to our next stop
Breakfast and lunch included.
